In the run-up to the Assembly election in Gujarat, Aam Aadmi Party chief and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to print images of Hindu deities Ganesh and Lakshmi on currency notes to “improve” India’s economy and for country’s “progress”.
Mr. Kejriwal said putting the images alone was not enough, but it had to be done along with other efforts. “I appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modiji, in Indian currency on one side there is an image of Gandhiji, it should be there itself. But on the other side images of Ganeshji and Lakshmiji should be put on Indian currency. To improve our economy, we need a lot of efforts... Along with it we need blessings of gods and goddesses,” Mr. Kejriwal said.
Sharp reactions
The BJP and several Opposition parties reacted sharply to the remarks.
BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said, “Those who till yesterday were threatening to put people behind the bars for celebrating Deepavali, who were dismissive of Ram Temple at Ayodhya, who insulted Swastika and Kashmiri Hindus are now showing their piety. This is the height of U-turn politics,” Mr. Patra said.
RJD MP Manoj K. Jha said the AAP which promised alternative politics was “proving to be glib talkers making half-witted proposals”. Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit called out Mr. Kejriwal’s comments as political gimmickry. “He is B team of BJP and RSS... It is his vote politics.”
CPI general secretary D. Raja said, “He is trying to get ahead of BJP in promoting communal politics and such a competitive communalism is deeply dangerous.”
