MUMBAI: Muslim leaders, including many in Congress, have slammed the party
for leaving out Maulana Abul Kalam Azad from an advertisement
of its most well-known leaders put out on Sunday to coincide with its
85th plenary session in Raipur
.After the omission got trolled on social media, Congress leader
Jairam Rameshapologized through a tweet, calling it "an inexcusable slipup." "Responsibility for it is being fixed and action will be taken," said Ramesh.
The ad carried images of 10 stalwarts, including past presidents of Congress as well as PMs who are no more. The notable exclusion is Maulana Azad, who spent over 10 years in British jails and was two-time INC president.
Some call it Congress plan to distance from minorities

A
Congress advertisement
put out on Sunday carried sepia-toned images of 10 stalwarts—Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Patel, B R Ambedkar, Subhash Chandra Bose, Sarojini Naidu, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and P V Narasimha Rao. The notable exclusion is Maulana Azad who spent over 10 years in British jails, was two-time president of INC, opposed the two-nation theory tooth and nail and became India’s first education minister after independence.
This is an unpardonable mistake on the part of those who approved the ad for an important occasion in the 137-year history of the Congress. I hope this is not true, but people are seeing it as part of the party’s strategy to stay away from Muslims, including Muslim freedom fighters,” said Mumbai Congress general secretary
Asif Farooqui.
Rightwing commentators and BJP leaders have often criticized the Congress for ignoring the legacies of Bose, Patel and Ambedkar. Naidu and Shastri seldom figure in ads released by Congress while Rao, many complain, is never given his due in the grand old party where Gandhi-Nehru have dominated for decades.
